Uni Preparation
Need some help getting up to speed? If you're worried that you haven't
studied the right level of maths for your uni course or think you may
have forgotten your maths between the HSC and the start of uni, then the
earlier you start the better. Have a look at the tuition information for
First Year Uni students.
You may also want to read below if you haven't studied much maths, or
have really forgotten the maths that you once knew.
Adult Learners/Maths Fundamentals
If it's been a while since you've studied maths and you're planning to do
some further study (such as an undergraduate degree or MBA), then it can be a good idea
to brush away some cobwebs before your course starts.
If you're pretty sure you've forgotten all the maths that you once knew,
or took a lower level maths subject at high school, then you'll need some
help getting up to speed. geek chick
can help you with this and help you efficiently gain this knowledge.
If you've studied maths at the appropriate level, but if you haven't used
it for a while then you may be feeling a bit unsure. Revision can give you
confidence about entering your course so you can be up and running right
from the start.
Fundamentals that geek chick can help you with
include:
-
fractions and percentages
-
order of operations
-
basic algebra
-
factorisation, expanding brackets
-
solving equations and simultaneous equations
-
powers, surds and logarithms
-
basic trigonometry
-
using a scientific calculator*
-
appropriate methods for setting out your solutions
You may also want geek chick to help refresh
your knowledge of:
-
further trigonometry (addition formulae, sine and cosine rules and
trig identities)
-
modelling with trig or exponential functions
-
calculus (limits, differentiation and integration)
-
basic probability
University Preparation Programs
Some Universities offer maths preparation or University preparation
courses to potential university students (see the
Adult Learners page for details
of some of these). If you're enrolled in one of these courses and wish
that there were more contact hours and need some extra help then
you might want to attend geek chick mixed group
or fundamentals courses in conjunction with the course you're enrolled
in.
Have a look at what's on offer and check out how geek chick
can help you get a grip on your maths.
*Note that some Universities do not allow students to use their own
calculator during exams. Don't buy a scientific calculator until you
know what type of calculator your Uni uses in their exams. Most Uni's
use a "CASIO School Scientific Calculator" similar to the CASIO-85AU
available at Big W, Tandy and Dick Smith for about $30.
