First Year University (Calculus & Linear Algebra)
Calculus & Linear Algebra
Most first year Uni maths courses* are based on
calculus and linear algebra. The usually cover a selection of topics including a selection from
the following list:
- limits
- continuity
- differentiation - chain, product and quotient rules
- integration - including by substitution and by parts
- differential equations
- inverse functions
- curve sketching - including parametric curves & polar coordinates
- complex numbers
- vectors, vector geometry and vector spaces
- matrices - systems of linear equations, determinants, inverses
- linear transformations
- eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalisation of matrices
- probability, random variables and statistics
First year University maths or statistics courses have an assumed
knowledge of at least HSC Mathematics (2 Unit Maths). Maths courses that
physics, engineering or actuarial students take usually assume a knowledge
of Mathematics Extension 1 (3 Unit Maths). You're expected to have
knowledge of function sketching and basic calculus (limits,
differentiation and integration) under your belt.
geek chick can help you get up to speed before the
start of your course, or help you catch up if you're concerned that you're
falling behind.
Provided she is not currently teaching the subjects
for UNSW, geek chick runs Cram Courses
for class tests for QMA, MATH1011, MATH1131 and MATH1231. These intensive
revision classes include working through sample class tests or past class
tests. Here's your opportunity to write your own worked solutions to the
sample tests!
